Mualaf: Building Bonds, Growing Together
Alhamdulillah, Revert Camp 2026 was held for three days, from 6 to 8 August 2026, with 20 reverts from different ethnicities and backgrounds taking part. Revert Camp was more than just a programme that brought new Muslims together. It became a space for them to meet, learn, share their experiences and realise that they were not alone in their journey as Muslims. Each participant came with their own story. Some were still new to Islam, some were learning to adapt to daily Islamic practices, while others had already been on their journey for some time. Despite their different backgrounds, they shared one thing in common: they were all learning how to live as Muslims.
The journey began early on 6 August. After performing Fajr prayer together at the Dawah Academy International prayer hall, the participants and staff prepared to travel to Melaka. At around 6:40 a.m., the group departed and arrived at the IDT Centre Melaka at around 9:00 a.m. Upon arrival, the participants received a short briefing about the programme and the activities planned for the three days. From that moment, the programme began to feel like more than just an organised event. It became a journey filled with new experiences, conversations and moments of laughter.
During their stay in Melaka, the participants stayed at Hotel Dusit Princess Melaka. Apart from providing a comfortable place to rest, the hotel also offered facilities such as a gym, swimming pool and sauna. Alhamdulillah, the participants were very happy with the accommodation and facilities provided. They had the opportunity to relax, enjoy their free time and spend time together outside the programme sessions. For some participants, simply sitting together, talking and getting to know one another in a relaxed setting became one of the most meaningful parts of the camp.
To break the ice, the participants took part in ice-breaking activities and mini games organised by the IDT staff. At first, some were still shy and did not know each other. But little by little, the atmosphere became more relaxed. Laughter filled the space, and the participants became more comfortable talking to one another. Although they came from different backgrounds, they began to find common ground through their experiences as new Muslims. People who had arrived as strangers slowly became more comfortable talking, eating together, joking around and sharing stories about their journeys.
Alongside the fun activities, Revert Camp also gave participants the opportunity to learn about the basics of Islam through sharing and learning sessions with the IDT Master Trainers, Brother Lim Jooi Soon, Ustaz Amin Yaacob and Ustaz Mohd Abdullah. These sessions allowed participants to understand Islam more closely and ask questions about situations they face in their daily lives. Some questions may seem small to others, but can be very important to someone who is still learning about Islam. Some were still getting used to the recitations in prayer, some wanted to understand how to practise certain acts of worship in different situations, while others simply needed someone who was willing to listen and answer their questions patiently.
The participants also had the opportunity to visit Masjid Cina Melaka and Masjid Negeri Melaka, where they performed prayers together. One meaningful experience was when some participants learned and performed jamak prayer for the first time. To others, this may seem like something ordinary. But for them, it was a new experience and another small step in understanding how Islam is practised in real life. These experiences allowed them to see Muslim life in a different setting, become more familiar with mosque activities and experience worship together with the Muslim community.
For some new Muslims, the journey of learning and practising Islam can come with many challenges. Some may not have many Muslim friends, some may still be looking for answers to different questions, while others are still learning to become comfortable with practices that were once unfamiliar to them. This is why meeting other new Muslims with different experiences can bring an important feeling: “I am not the only one going through this.”
Throughout the three days, they did not only learn from the trainers. They also learned from one another. They shared experiences, asked questions, listened to each other’s stories and offered support. In a relaxed and welcoming environment, they could ask questions without feeling embarrassed, share without feeling awkward and learn without feeling alone. This is what made Revert Camp more than just a programme. It became a space where new Muslims could learn, share, ask questions and support one another as they continued their journey as Muslims.
Alhamdulillah, throughout Revert Camp 2026, the participants gained not only new knowledge and experiences, but also new connections. They arrived not knowing one another and left with new friends. They came with many questions and left with a little more understanding. And for those who may have felt alone in their journey as Muslims, they found a space where they felt accepted and valued.
IDT hopes that this programme can continue and reach more new Muslims in the future, giving them the same opportunity to learn, connect and grow together. May this small step become part of their longer journey to know, understand and love Islam. Because every Muslim’s journey may be different, but no one should have to walk it alone.
